Make In India electric car to be sold in Japan (X)
India's car manufacturing industry is changing gears and quickly. The latest evidence? An Indian-made electric car will now be retailed in Japan, demonstrating the increasing strength of the 'Make in India' campaign and confidence in Indian engineering across the globe. Although the car has not yet rolled into Indian stores, it's already destined for one of the most competitive markets Japan.
India today is among the world's top 5 automobile manufacturing countries. From small hatchbacks to tough SUVs, Indian cars are now being shipped overseas to nations in Europe, Africa, Latin America and even Japan. This international presence is a reflection of India's cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and quality in manufacturing. The upcoming electric SUV, Maruti e-Vitara, will be the latest addition to this growing export list, reinforcing India’s position as a trusted global auto manufacturer.
The Maruti e-Vitara will be the first electric vehicle of Maruti Suzuki India, manufactured wholly in India and exported to Japan prior to its local launch. This is not only a commercial move it's a statement of courage. When a Japanese automaker like Suzuki Motor Corporation decides to bring in cars from its Indian subsidiary, it indicates volumes regarding the faith and competence of Indian manufacturing. This will be the fourth India-assembled Maruti vehicle to hit the Japanese market, after successful exports of Baleno, Fronx, and 5-door Jimny.
Maruti Suzuki India has already proven itself to be a solid export performance record. For 2024 alone, the company exported close to 3 lakh vehicles, most of which were completely made in India. Vehicles such as the 5-door Jimny produced in Haryana are exported to more than 100 nations. Now, the e-Vitara will carry this legacy forward as the company transitions into electric mobility.
The e-Vitara will be manufactured at Suzuki’s EV facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The state-of-the-art plant will handle both domestic and international production. The car is expected to launch in India by September, just in time for the festive season.
Aims to be priced at ₹17 lakh, this electric SUV will deliver premium goodies like ADAS safety features, 7 airbags, and a maximum range of 500 km on a single charge. But that's not all; Maruti is also set to support it with a 10-year battery warranty, which will be a game-changer in the EV space.
The forthcoming Japanese launch of the Maruti e-Vitara represents a watershed moment—not only for Maruti Suzuki, but for India's electric vehicle ecosystem at large. It indicates that EVs manufactured in India are now capable of competing not only across the world, but even in high-standard economies such as Japan.
As more players leverage India's manufacturing advantage, 'Make in India' is now more than a slogan—it is an international reality.
